Auto-detect your star schema from any SQL DDL

Dimensional modeling is tedious to do by hand. Upload a CREATE TABLE DDL export and the Dimensional Model Explorer automatically classifies each table as a fact or dimension, flags measure columns, and renders the result as an interactive star schema graph.

How classification works

  • Fact tables: Tables with multiple foreign keys and numeric measure-like columns (totals, amounts, quantities, counts) are classified as facts.
  • Dimension tables: Tables primarily referenced by others, with descriptive attribute columns, are classified as dimensions.
  • Keys & measures: Primary keys, foreign keys, and measure columns get distinct color-coded badges in the table detail panel.
  • Graph layout: Facts sit at the center of the star, connected outward to their dimension tables.

Common use cases

Data warehouse design review

Validate that your OLTP-to-warehouse mapping actually forms a clean star schema.

BI tool onboarding

Give analysts a visual map of facts and dimensions before building dashboards.

Legacy warehouse documentation

Reverse-engineer an undocumented warehouse schema into a readable star diagram.

Interview & teaching prep

Quickly generate example star schemas to explain dimensional modeling concepts.

FAQ

How does it detect fact vs dimension tables? Tables with multiple foreign keys and numeric measure-like columns (totals, amounts, counts) are classified as facts; tables primarily referenced by others with descriptive attributes are classified as dimensions.

What do the badge colors mean? Red badges mark fact tables and measures, green marks dimension tables and keys, amber marks foreign keys, and cyan marks regular attributes.

Does it work with any SQL dialect? Yes — any CREATE TABLE DDL with standard PRIMARY KEY / FOREIGN KEY syntax, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, and SQL Server exports.

Is this the same as the Schema Explorer? No — Schema Explorer shows raw table relationships. Dimensional Model Explorer specifically classifies tables into a star schema (facts vs. dimensions) for data warehouse modeling.
